Beach Reads, Golf Carts, Bird Romance, and 100 Days

It is 20 degrees outside today.  I’m done with that.

I couldn’t bear the thought of going out to go to church.  One foot out and every part of my body starts to hurt.  Add to my list of things that shift as we age.  Cold never used to bother me.  I would just toss on additional layers and out I would go.  When the heck did it start that a few minutes in cold air equals a couple of days of pain in all the joints?  Shesh!  (Thank goodness for my church’s online “rerun” of service this afternoon.)

The good news is there are definite signs of summer.

My local library’s posts of new digital books available this week were almost completely beach reads.  Not that anyone is going to grab a book and go sit on the sand.  But goes to show that everyone is getting antsy and wanting to start picking up summertime habits.

It sounds like a summer weekend here at the house.  My community is a beach community, and many of my neighbors do not live here full-time.  One of the things I look forward to when I think of the shifting of the seasons seeing returning neighbors who spend weekends, vacations, and holidays here at their second house.  I don’t know what the draw of this cold weekend in February is, but for some reason many neighbors are here.  One of the first things folks do when they show up is get their golf carts charged and go for a ride around the neighborhood.  I get that – it was the same for us when we were part-time residents.  But … if you recall … it is 20 degrees outside.  That makes for a COLD golf cart ride!  I imagine that the attitude is, “We are at the beach house, and we WILL do beach house things!”  Golf carts are a big part of life here.  Gotta give folks credit.  But.  Brrr.  It is, though, one of the sounds of summer.

All the Titmouse boys are singing their little lungs out.  They are working hard at impressing the ladies.  That is such a wonderful sound of spring-with-the-promise-of-summer.  Titmice became my favorite birds after we moved here.  I love the way their songs change throughout the year.  And here’s to the boys who are doing the courtship thing.  Reminding us that in the midst of the cold, there is romancing to be done, babies to be made, and nests to be built.  Talk about invincible!

And here’s to a friend’s Facebook post this past week reminding neighbors that it is 100 days until our community pool opens.

But if I may, Momma Nature … temps above freezing would be nice.
